Garden Shed One Room Challenge: Week 1

With the changing of seasons I always have the urge to take on some sort of project at home. Typically Fall is overwhelmingly busy with work that I never quite get the chance to focus on our own home because client work comes first. Well I found a way to sneak a little bit of work into my own project. This Fall I am participating in ONE ROOM CHALLENGE to revamp my garden shed into a multi-purpose space to create, garden and occasionally just sneak away for some much needed me time!

Here is a little bit of the back story… So the she-shed arrived to our backyard this past June. I discovered Hillbrook Collections a few years back when I joined The Scout Guide. At the time our yard was a complete dumpster fire so the dream of having one of these beauties grace my landscaping seemed a little far fetched. With a little patience and a whole lot of muscle we were able to completely transform our backyard from an overgrown ivy jungle to my own little slice of hydrangea heaven. The side yard gets the best sunlight so we added 4 raised garden beds to take full advantage. It looked great, but something was just missing… the crown jewel of the garden. It was time to for the she-shed. The timing couldn’t be better really. The yard just had a major glow up and working from home was getting a bit too distracting. Unfortunately, I was not blessed with the personality that is able to tune out all the distractions and just focus on work. I need the flexibility of working from home but with the privacy of my own studio outside of our actual home. This was the perfect solution!

Now I know what you’re probably thinking. Don’t touch that gorgeous cedar!!! I know it pains me too, but in order to make the best use of this space I need to insulate the walls. I’m toying with a white wash for the ceiling so the wood will still be exposed a bit. The shed came pre-electrified so all I need to do there is run some wire from our house and hang the fixtures. Once that is complete I should have a better idea of just how much I will need to conceal the wires within the walls. Below is a story board I created to help better explain ALL the things that will be taking place the next 8 weeks. The floors were intentionally left raw so I could try my hand at a classic Bunny Melon inspired hand painted look. I’m not entirely sure I have to space for a work island but I would love to transform the workbench above into a chic little storage space with a skirt to hide all the many samples I tend to store. I have had my eye on Schumacher Cabanon Stripe for a while now and I think this will be the perfect space to use it! If time allows it I am dreaming of a little storage hutch with those adorable cut outs seen in Devol Kitchens. Furnishings will be kept to a minimum but I promise not to skimp on patterns!

Just to give you further insight into my home’s inspiration here are some story boards that I create for the exterior of our classic style Cape Cod. Connecting outdoor spaces is just as important as connecting interior ones. The flow between the she-shed and our home will be accentuated with diamond pavers and you guessed it… more hydrangeas. I can’t wait to share this journey with you all. Be sure to check back next week for all the progress we make.
